History of Medieval Music and its Performance II (1150-1300)

Presentation

This course conducts an in-depth exploration of monophonic and polyphonic medieval music composed between 1150 and 1300, through the study of its functions, social and cultural contexts and performance practices. Each class will present discussions and practical work on notation, sources, theoretical writings, and performance practice theories. At the end of the course, the student will have a good command of medieval music theory, modern musicological historiography, and different theories about orality and performance conventions associated with each repertoire, style and period.

Este curso explora en profundidad la música medieval monódica y polifónica y su desarrollo entre el 1150 y el 1300 a través del estudio de su función, contexto social y cultural y su interpretación. Cada clase presenta discusiones y trabajo práctico sobre notación, fuentes, contextos y prácticas performativas. Al final del curso el estudiante tendrá un buen manejo de teoría y notación musical, de historiografía y de diferentes teorías sobre oralidad y convenciones interpretativas asociadas a cada repertorio, estilo y período.

Knowledge of basic music theory and modern music notation. Conocimiento de fundamentos musicales y lectura de notación musical moderna.
