Presentation
In medieval Europe, frame drums were principally used to accompany dance songs, processional music, and instrumental compositions. Medieval sources reveal that skillful frame drummers stroke the instruments with both hands, utilized fast subdivision, applied complex shakes, and kept the instruments in constant movement (part of a visual effect that affected sound). The result was a vigorous and flashy performance that allowed subtle playing.In this course students will study different types of hand, finger, fist strokes, and shakes. Different techniques will be applied to improvisations constructed over the medieval rhythmic modes, and to the accompaniment of pieces from the medieval repertoire. Students will also explore some applicable Arabic rhythms.
En la Europa medieval, los panderos circulares y cuadrados se usaban principalmente para acompañar canciones de baile, música procesional y composiciones instrumentales. Las fuentes medievales revelan que sus intérpretes tocan los instrumentos con ambas manos, utilizan rápidas subdiviciones, aplicaban 'shakes' y mantenían los instrumentos en constante movimiento (parte de un efecto visual que afectaba el sonido). El resultado era una interpretación vigorosa y llamativa que permitía tocar con sutileza.
